Ki 13 Raises $5M for Biomass Electrolysis

Climate tech is not only about software and carbon dashboards. Ki 13’s seed round is a smaller but useful signal that investors are still backing process innovation in hard-to-decarbonise systems.

What happened

UK cleantech company Ki 13 raised a $5M seed round to develop biomass electrolysis technology. The round was led by HICO Investment Group, with participation from Burgest, Triple Impact Ventures, GiTV, Desai Ventures and Innovate UK match funding.

The company is working on a process technology approach rather than a pure software layer.

Why it matters

Industrial decarbonisation often requires new chemistry, new materials and new production processes. These startups can be slower and riskier than climate software, but they may address deeper emissions problems if the technology scales.

Biomass electrolysis sits in that harder category: potentially important, but dependent on technical validation, feedstock economics and industrial deployment.

The bigger picture

Climate investing has become more disciplined after the first wave of enthusiasm. Capital is still available for technical bets, but companies need to show a credible route from lab-scale process to commercial system.

Ki 13 is early, but it reflects a broader shift toward climate infrastructure that changes how things are made, not just how emissions are measured.
