Katalyst Space is working to regain control of its LINK spacecraft after multiple hardware problems caused it to tumble in orbit.

What happened

Two of the spacecraft's three reaction wheels failed, while its thruster system also developed problems. Controllers are attempting to stabilise LINK before its planned operation to raise NASA's Swift Observatory into a higher orbit.

The mission is intended to extend the observatory's useful life as atmospheric drag gradually lowers its orbit.

Why it matters

This is NASA's first privately contracted attempt to prolong an observatory's life by changing its orbit. A successful mission would support a growing commercial market for inspecting, repositioning and eventually repairing spacecraft already in orbit.

The current failure shows why that market is difficult. Servicing spacecraft must navigate precisely, remain stable and operate near valuable assets with little room for error.

The bigger picture

Satellite servicing could change space infrastructure from disposable hardware into maintainable assets. But the business case depends on reliability: customers will only trust a servicing vehicle near an expensive satellite if its control systems are exceptionally robust. LINK's recovery effort is therefore a test of both one mission and the wider market's technical maturity.
