Jio Platforms begins trading in Mumbai following an approximately $3.2 billion IPO, with shares opening around 21% above the issue price.

Jio Surges 21% After Record $3.2B IPO

One of India's largest digital platforms is now publicly traded, providing investors with a new way to value the country's connectivity and technology ecosystem.

What happened

Jio Platforms, the telecommunications and digital-services business associated with Reliance Industries, debuted on Indian stock exchanges following an initial public offering that raised approximately $3.2 billion through new shares.

The stock opened at about ₹1,358, compared with an issue price of ₹1,119, a premium of roughly 21%. The opening price implied a market valuation of approximately $132 billion, depending on the exchange rate used.

Jio operates a major mobile network with more than 530 million users and has expanded into broadband, cloud services, digital platforms and AI initiatives. Its existing investors include major international technology and financial institutions.

The IPO proceeds are expected to support debt repayment and general corporate purposes. The amount should not be characterised as a dedicated new investment into AI products.

Why it matters

Jio combines telecommunications infrastructure with a vast consumer distribution network. That reach could support new digital services, including AI applications, although telecommunications remains central to the business.

The listing provides a public-market valuation benchmark for a large private-backed Indian technology platform and a potential liquidity pathway for investors in India's growing digital economy.

A strong opening share price does not guarantee future investment returns. Continued performance will depend on subscriber economics, capital expenditure, competition and progress in new services.

The bigger picture

Global technology exits are not limited to US exchanges. Large domestic markets can support public listings for businesses combining infrastructure, software and digital distribution, offering investors a broader set of opportunities to realise private-market value.
