Intel Makes a Rare Bet on a Secretive Chip Startup
Intel is reportedly giving RosaicLabs access to Atom processor designs, an unusually deep transfer of chip intellectual property to a young company.

Large chipmakers do not usually hand a new startup the internal building blocks of a processor. Intel is reportedly doing exactly that with RosaicLabs.
What happened
Intel is reportedly providing the newly incorporated startup with register-transfer-level code for its Atom processor technology.
That code describes how parts of a chip operate and interact. Access could allow RosaicLabs to build customised processor designs without starting every component from zero.
Why it matters
Chip development is expensive and slow. Reusing proven intellectual property can reduce technical risk and let a startup focus on tailoring a processor for a particular market, such as edge devices or specialised computing.
The arrangement could also give Intel another route for its technology. Rather than selling only finished processors, it may allow outside teams to adapt parts of its architecture for new products.
For RosaicLabs, the relationship provides credibility and access that would be extremely difficult for a typical early-stage company to obtain.

Semiconductor companies increasingly mix internal development, licensing and chiplet partnerships. Custom chips are becoming more attractive as companies seek hardware designed for specific AI workloads.
A flexible licensing model could help established chipmakers participate even when they do not build the final product themselves.
