What happened

Indian authorities directed GitHub to restrict access within the country to repositories associated with Bitchat, an open-source messaging project designed to communicate through nearby Bluetooth connections.

The application attracted attention during periods of internet disruption because nearby devices can exchange messages without relying entirely on conventional mobile-data networks.

The order targets access to the code repository rather than only a hosted messaging service.

Why it matters

Blocking a repository does not necessarily remove software that has already been downloaded, forked or mirrored elsewhere. Open-source projects can persist across multiple hosting platforms and user devices.

The decision also places code-hosting companies in the position of responding to national restrictions on tools that may have both legitimate and controversial uses.

The bigger picture

Governments have traditionally controlled digital communication through telecom operators, app stores and internet-service providers. Decentralised and offline-capable tools weaken those control points.
