HyLight Raises €13M for Hydrogen Airships
French startup HyLight has raised €13 million to expand its autonomous hydrogen-powered airships for inspecting energy and transport infrastructure.

French startup HyLight has raised €13 million to expand its autonomous hydrogen-powered airships for inspecting energy and transport infrastructure.
What happened
HyLight secured €13 million from investors including Rubio Impact Ventures, DRW and Teampact Ventures, alongside previous backers. Its 12-metre HyLighter aircraft are designed to inspect power lines, pipelines and railway networks using onboard sensing and automated analysis. The startup reports more than 750 flight hours and customer relationships with infrastructure operators including Enedis, NaTran, Téréga, SNCF Réseau and VINCI. It aims to expand its operating fleet from four aircraft to 15 by 2027. Those milestones represent company-reported operational experience and forward-looking plans, not a guarantee that the fleet expansion will be completed.
Why it matters
Infrastructure operators need frequent inspections to identify damage and prevent outages, but helicopters are expensive and field surveys can be slow or risky. An autonomous aircraft that stays aloft efficiently could lower operating costs and reduce emissions while generating data for maintenance teams. The economic comparison will depend on reliability, weather limitations and the quality of defect detection.
The bigger picture
HyLight is an example of climate technology aimed at improving an existing industrial service rather than replacing its entire infrastructure. Bringing together aircraft, sensors and analytics could create a defensible operating platform. Scaling it requires regulatory permissions, maintenance capacity and repeat contracts, making execution just as important as the airship technology.
