Handoff launches AI for construction takeoffs

Construction estimating still requires people to inspect drawings, measure dimensions and count materials trade by trade. Handoff is trying to automate that visual and numerical work rather than simply help write the final proposal.
What happened
Handoff launched H1, a specialised AI system for residential blueprint takeoffs.
Users upload a set of plans, and the system identifies relevant elements, measures quantities and produces takeoff drawings connected to editable estimate line items. The product is available through Handoff’s platform for higher-tier subscribers and through an API.
Handoff says H1 outperformed general-purpose AI models by more than 30 benchmark points and performed comparably with experienced estimators on residential plans. Those results were produced by the company and require independent validation across broader project types.
The current workflow is focused on residential projects and is designed to generate a draft that a professional can review rather than an unquestionable final estimate.
Why it matters
Takeoffs are time-consuming but commercially important. A missed quantity can destroy a contractor’s margin, while slow estimating can cause a company to miss bidding opportunities.
A model trained specifically on construction drawings may handle symbols, scales and trade conventions better than a general vision model. Integration with pricing and proposal software makes the output more useful than a standalone blueprint analysis.

Vertical AI systems are becoming more specialised as companies move beyond general chat interfaces. The strongest products combine domain models with workflow data and a clear human review step.
