Grab has agreed to acquire a 60% controlling stake in Atome Financial for $1.49 billion, deepening its move into lending and consumer finance across Southeast Asia.

Grab Buys 60% of Atome for $1.49B

Grab is pushing further beyond ride-hailing and food delivery into financial services. The company has agreed to acquire a 60% controlling stake in Atome Financial for $1.49 billion in cash.

What happened

Atome operates buy-now-pay-later, consumer lending and digital-credit products across markets including Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand.

Grab will initially acquire 60% of the company and has the ability to buy the remaining 40% later under agreed terms and performance conditions.

Atome brings an existing underwriting platform, merchant network and customer base that Grab can connect with its own payments and financial-services ecosystem.

Why it matters

Consumer credit is becoming one of the more valuable layers in Southeast Asian fintech. Grab already has distribution through its mobility, delivery and payments businesses, but acquiring Atome gives it a more mature lending engine rather than requiring years of internal build-out.

The transaction could also create more cross-selling opportunities across merchants, drivers and consumers already inside Grab's ecosystem.

The bigger picture

Southeast Asian super apps are increasingly being judged on whether they can turn large user bases into profitable financial-services businesses.

This acquisition is a significant step in that direction. It also shows how regional fintech is entering a consolidation phase where large platforms buy specialised credit and payments capabilities instead of competing across every product from scratch.
