Google is testing a more practical direction for consumer AI agents by focusing on the messy coordination work involved in running a household.
What happened
The company updated CC, its Gemini-powered agent, with household-management capabilities.
CC can combine information from email, calendars and tasks to create shopping lists, meal plans and reminders, fill permission forms, track appointments and maintain shared household information.
The experiment currently targets adult US Gmail users and can coordinate information for households of up to six people.
Why it matters
Many consumer AI products struggle to move beyond conversation because they lack access to the context needed to take useful action.
Household management is a demanding test because it requires persistent memory, multiple users, permissions and information spread across different applications.
If an agent can reliably coordinate that complexity, it becomes substantially more useful than a chatbot.
The bigger picture
Consumer AI is moving toward systems that sit across email, calendars, files and applications rather than living inside one chat interface. Google has a natural advantage because it already controls many of those services. The larger competition will increasingly be about trust, permissions and integration depth rather than model quality alone.
