Google Replaces Gemini Gems With Skills
Google retires Gemini Gems and migrates custom assistants into a reusable Skills system.

Google is redesigning Gemini customisation around reusable skills rather than separate custom assistants.
What happened
Google said it will retire Gemini Gems and automatically migrate users' custom assistants into a new Skills system beginning November 17.
Gems were created to store instructions for repeated tasks. Skills are intended to make custom behaviour reusable across different AI workflows rather than keeping each custom assistant as a separate product.
The shift changes how users package recurring instructions and capabilities inside Gemini.
Why it matters
This is a product-architecture signal.
AI companies are moving away from collections of small, separately branded bots and toward one general assistant that can acquire reusable capabilities.
That structure may be easier for users because they do not have to decide which bot to open. The assistant simply uses the relevant skill when needed.
The bigger picture
The next phase of consumer AI may look less like an app drawer and more like a capability layer.
Users will not necessarily manage dozens of custom agents. Instead, they may train one assistant with persistent preferences, workflows and skills that can be invoked across tasks.
