Google Launches Cheaper Gemini Models and Restricted Cyber AI

Google released three Gemini models aimed at faster, cheaper agent workloads and restricted cybersecurity applications.

Google Launches Cheaper Gemini Models and Restricted Cyber AI

The frontier-model race is splitting into different lanes: cheaper general models for everyday agents and tightly controlled systems for sensitive cyber work.

What happened

Google DeepMind released Gemini 3.6 Flash, Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite and Gemini 3.5 Flash Cyber.

Google positions the first two models around fast, lower-cost production workloads. It says Gemini 3.6 Flash improves coding and knowledge work while using 17% fewer output tokens than Gemini 3.5 Flash. Flash-Lite is aimed at high-volume tasks where latency and price matter more than maximum capability.

Gemini 3.5 Flash Cyber is designed to identify and help remediate software vulnerabilities. Because those capabilities can also be misused, Google is initially limiting access to selected governments and trusted partners.

The company did not release the anticipated Gemini 3.5 Pro and said it remains under testing with partners.

Why it matters

Businesses deploying AI agents at scale pay for every token and wait for every response. Small improvements in efficiency can therefore matter more commercially than another benchmark win, particularly for customer support, coding and workflow automation.

The cyber model raises a different issue. A system that can find weaknesses may help defenders, but the same capability can lower the cost of attacking software. Restricted access gives Google a way to test the product while controlling who can use it.

The bigger picture

AI companies are moving away from one universal flagship toward portfolios built for different costs, speeds and risk levels. The competitive question is becoming not only who has the smartest model, but who can offer the right capability with workable economics and governance.
