Google-backed nuclear restart gets $1.9B boost
A Google-backed nuclear plant restart has received a $1.9 billion US government loan as AI power demand reshapes energy infrastructure.

AI electricity demand is helping make old nuclear assets economically interesting again.
What happened
NextEra Energy received a $1.9 billion US Department of Energy loan to refurbish an Iowa nuclear plant that Google had previously agreed to support bringing back online. The facility is expected to restart in 2029.
Why it matters
Restarting an existing plant can potentially bring firm low-carbon capacity online faster than building an entirely new reactor project. For hyperscalers, that matters as data-centre electricity demand rises faster than many grids can add reliable generation.
The bigger picture
The AI infrastructure race is increasingly an energy race. Big technology companies are moving beyond renewable power purchase agreements into nuclear, geothermal and other firm-power technologies that can support continuous compute loads.
