Golbriak Space has raised €4 million to develop laser communication equipment for satellite constellations and airborne applications.
What happened
The Estonian spacetech company secured seed backing from investors including Join Capital and PhotonVentures through its associated business structure. Its optical terminals are designed to move information using laser links rather than conventional radio-frequency connections. Product lines have been described for satellites and airborne systems, with the aim of simplifying integration into different platforms. The company reports paying customers and discussions for potentially large future programmes. Those negotiations are not completed contracts, and proposed production volumes should not be treated as confirmed orders.
Why it matters
Larger satellite constellations need reliable ways to move growing amounts of information between spacecraft and down to users. Optical links can offer high bandwidth and avoid some radio-spectrum constraints, but demand precise alignment, dependable components and robust performance in difficult conditions.
The bigger picture
As satellite services expand, component suppliers may gain opportunities by solving reusable technical problems for multiple constellation operators. Golbriak is pursuing that infrastructure layer. Success will depend on manufacturing yield, cost, interoperability and delivery reliability—not just demonstrated optical throughput.
