Japanese education startup Gecipe completes a ¥660 million Series B financing programme to expand multiplayer game-based English learning.

Gecipe Closes ¥660M Immersive Learning Round

Learning a language requires practice, but traditional exercises do not always create opportunities for spontaneous conversation. Gecipe is using multiplayer games to make spoken English part of an activity students want to join.

What happened

Japanese education company Gecipe announced the final close of its Series B financing, taking the cumulative amount across the round to approximately ¥660 million.

The financing involves venture investors and other sources of capital, including banking or public-sector lenders. The full amount should not be described as entirely new equity raised on the announcement date.

Gecipe operates e-Spi!, an online English-learning service that combines lessons with multiplayer video games. Participants use English while collaborating, competing and communicating during gameplay.

The company says it has delivered more than 600,000 lessons since launching in 2020 and reports a retention rate above 96%. It is also expanding its offerings to schools and local government programmes in Japan. Those operating metrics are company-reported and do not themselves measure learning outcomes.

Why it matters

Gamified learning can offer more opportunities for practice and sustained engagement, especially for students who find conventional language instruction repetitive. The commercial question is whether higher participation translates into demonstrable language improvement.

Game-based lessons also depend on teaching quality, curriculum design and a safe environment for learners, rather than entertainment value alone.

The bigger picture

Education technology continues to explore formats that connect motivation with structured instruction. Gecipe is a modest but distinctive example of immersive learning, with its long-term value depending on verified educational results, retention and scalable delivery economics.
