Galaxy built its infrastructure around cryptocurrency. It is now using the same appetite for power and large computing sites to move into AI.
What happened
Galaxy acquired approximately 500 acres in McGregor, Texas, for an AI and high-performance-computing campus.
The initial phase is planned at 74MW, with power delivery targeted for 2028. The company intends to fund its own substation and provide financial assurances for required grid upgrades.
Why it matters
Crypto mining and AI data centres use different hardware, but they share some basic needs: large sites, reliable electricity, cooling systems and the ability to manage energy-intensive computing.
Galaxy’s experience with crypto infrastructure therefore gives it assets and operational knowledge that may be repurposed for AI customers.
The private substation is also important. Electricity grids are overwhelmed by speculative data-centre requests. Requiring developers to fund infrastructure and put capital at risk can help distinguish credible projects from placeholders in the connection queue.
The bigger picture
Crypto infrastructure companies are looking for more stable and diversified demand. AI companies, meanwhile, need campuses with secured power. That creates a natural meeting point between the two industries.
The transition will not be automatic. AI customers require different reliability, networking and technical standards from crypto miners.
