Flapping Airplanes raises $1B for more efficient AI
Index Ventures and Lux Capital co-lead a $1 billion Series A for research into more efficient AI.

What happened
Flapping Airplanes announced a $1 billion Series A co-led by Index Ventures and Lux Capital. The research lab is working on ways to make AI more efficient across GPU software, model training and inference. Its approach spans the software running on chips and the models those chips support.
Why it matters
Compute, electricity and usable training data all constrain AI development. Improving how much useful work existing hardware can perform could therefore create value across the AI ecosystem. The financing gives the team substantial resources to pursue that research, but funding alone does not demonstrate that its technical approach will succeed.
The bigger picture
The interesting question is what becomes usable outside the lab. Commercial products, reproducible results and measurable cost improvements will matter more than ambitious efficiency claims. For founders and investors, the round signals continued appetite for research-led AI companies pursuing better economics across the stack.
