Figma buys Bud team as design moves closer to code

The boundary between designing software and building it is getting thinner.

What happened

Figma acquired the team behind Bud, formerly known as Orchids, a Y Combinator-backed startup that evolved from a vibe-coding product into an agent platform capable of browsing, accessing services and writing code.

Bud and Orchids are shutting down, requiring users to migrate existing projects. Transaction terms were not disclosed.

Why it matters

Figma has long owned an important part of the product-design workflow. Agentic coding creates a path to move closer to implementation.

Acquiring a team with experience in code-generating and action-taking agents suggests Figma wants to participate in the layer between design intent and working software.

That could strengthen its position as visual creation and software generation converge.

The bigger picture

Developer tools and design tools are beginning to overlap.

AI can translate interfaces into code, modify products through natural language and coordinate work across multiple systems. The winners may be platforms that connect human design intent with agentic execution rather than specialising in only one side of the workflow.
