FAST Metals Wants to Turn Aluminium Waste Into Critical Minerals

Aluminium production creates an enormous waste problem. FAST Metals thinks that waste could also become a source of critical minerals.
What happened
FAST Metals raised a $4.3 million pre-seed round led by New Climate Ventures.
The company uses a chemical process to recover iron, aluminium, titanium, scandium and rare-earth elements from red mud, the alkaline waste left by aluminium refining.
It has also secured an initial contract with Metalox to process one ton of material per week at a Florida facility.
Why it matters
Red mud is difficult to store and manage, while many of the minerals trapped inside it are strategically important for electronics, clean energy and defence supply chains.
Recovering those materials could address two problems at once: reduce an industrial waste stream and create a domestic source of minerals that would otherwise require new mining or imports.
The Metalox agreement gives FAST a route from laboratory work toward commercial testing, which is an important step for any industrial climate technology.
The bigger picture
Critical-mineral startups are exploring waste streams, mine tailings and recycled products as alternatives to opening new mines. These sources can be politically easier, but the chemistry and economics still need to work at industrial scale.
