Exploration Company wins €760M ESA cargo contract
ESA has awarded The Exploration Company a service contract worth up to €760 million for Europe’s commercial cargo service to the ISS.

Europe is moving from backing private space companies with capital to buying missions from them.
What happened
The Exploration Company has won an ESA service contract worth up to €760 million to develop and fly its Nyx cargo capsule to the International Space Station. The structure includes €310 million for an initial demonstration mission and up to €450 million for two optional follow-on missions. Nyx is designed to carry cargo to low Earth orbit and return payloads to Earth.
Why it matters
This is more important than another financing round because it creates contracted demand. Space startups often struggle to bridge the gap between technology development and recurring commercial missions; an anchor customer such as ESA can de-risk that transition and support manufacturing, certification and operations.
The bigger picture
Europe is increasingly borrowing from NASA’s commercial-space playbook: rather than relying only on incumbent primes, public agencies are using procurement to create a market for private orbital services. If the model works, it could accelerate a broader European ecosystem around cargo, in-orbit logistics and reusable spacecraft.
