Europe's open-source users are urged to become maintainers
European organisations were urged to contribute to open-source maintenance and governance rather than only consume shared software.

What happened
Speakers at Open Source Summit Europe called on European organisations to contribute more actively to the software they use. They argued that consumption without participation in maintenance and governance does not provide meaningful technological sovereignty.
Why it matters
Open-source components underpin much of the technology economy. Organisations that depend on them also inherit maintenance, security and governance risks, especially as AI agents increase the volume of generated code.
The bigger picture
Digital sovereignty depends on skills, sustained funding and influence over shared infrastructure. Survey-based claims about returns and AI adoption should be treated as directional until independently validated.
