Europe Launches €40M AI Chip Challenge
SPRIND and NADI launch a €40M challenge to support new approaches to European AI chip design.

Europe’s AI sovereignty problem extends all the way down to chip design.
What happened
SPRIND and NADI launched a €40 million challenge focused on reinventing European AI chip design.
The initiative is intended to draw teams toward new approaches for building more capable and efficient AI hardware. It targets one of the hardest layers of the AI stack: the chips that determine compute cost, energy efficiency and deployment constraints.
The challenge model is designed to mobilise startups, researchers and engineering teams around a defined strategic bottleneck.
Why it matters
Europe cannot build an independent AI ecosystem through models and cloud projects alone.
Chips remain one of the most concentrated and strategically important parts of the supply chain. Better AI hardware could reduce dependence on external suppliers while improving energy efficiency and deployment flexibility.
The bigger picture
AI infrastructure is becoming a sovereignty issue.
Governments are increasingly using funds, challenges and public-private programmes to steer technical development toward strategic needs. The chip-design challenge reflects that shift from passive funding to targeted industrial policy.
