EQT reportedly considers leading Mistral’s next mega-round

EQT is reportedly considering leading or co-leading Mistral AI’s next financing, potentially making Europe’s best-known frontier-model company the first investment from its €5B Scaleup Europe Fund.

What happened

The discussions were reported by people familiar with the matter. Earlier reports suggested Mistral was exploring a financing of roughly €3B at a valuation near €20B, but neither the amount, valuation nor EQT’s participation has been confirmed by the company or investor.

The Scaleup Europe Fund was created to provide larger pools of growth capital to European technology companies that might otherwise depend on US or Middle Eastern investors. A Mistral investment would fit that mandate because frontier AI requires unusually large spending on compute, talent and infrastructure.

This remains a reported negotiation, not a completed financing.

Why it matters

Europe has produced globally relevant AI research and startups, but it has often struggled to finance companies once capital requirements reach the billions. Mistral is a direct test of whether European investors can support a frontier-model business through the expensive scaling phase.

A large domestic financing could strengthen Mistral’s independence and align with European concerns about control over models, data and infrastructure.

The bigger picture

The potential deal reflects how venture and private-equity investors are moving closer together in late-stage AI. Frontier companies need growth capital on a scale historically associated with infrastructure or buyouts, not ordinary software rounds.

Until the parties announce terms, the story should be treated as strategic signalling rather than a closed transaction. The key questions are the final valuation, investor rights and whether the capital meaningfully improves Mistral’s access to compute.
