What happened
Endeavor Optical Networks emerged from stealth with $10.75 million in seed funding. The startup wants to build a space-based laser communications network that can connect data centres from orbit.
Its plan is to use laser-equipped spacecraft to move high-volume data across long distances, beginning with a demonstration satellite planned around the end of 2027. The company is targeting routes where undersea fibre is expensive, slow to deploy or vulnerable to congestion and physical risk.
Why it matters
This is a space infrastructure story, but it is also an AI infrastructure story. As AI workloads grow, data centres need not only power and chips, but high-capacity connectivity between compute locations.
Undersea cables remain the backbone of the internet, but they are expensive, politically sensitive and difficult to build. A space-laser network would be a very different architecture for moving data between regions.
The bigger picture
AI is expanding the definition of infrastructure. The market is no longer just about cloud regions and GPUs; it now includes power, cooling, optical links, satellites and physical resilience.
EON is early, and the technical execution risk is high. But the startup reflects a broader theme: as compute becomes more valuable, the networks connecting compute become more strategic too.
