Draig raises $65M for depression treatments

Draig Therapeutics is advancing conventional neuroscience drugs that precisely modulate brain signalling rather than relying on newer psychedelic approaches.

Draig raises $65M for depression treatments

Depression affects a large population, but many patients do not respond adequately to existing medicines. Draig Therapeutics has raised new capital to test a more targeted approach to the brain circuits involved.

What happened

The Wales-based biotech closed an oversubscribed $65 million Series B led by Deep Track Capital. Janus Henderson, Marshall Wace, Jefferson Life Sciences and the British Business Bank also participated.

Draig develops small-molecule medicines that modulate AMPA and GABA-A receptors, two important parts of the brain’s excitatory and inhibitory signalling systems. Its lead programme, DT-101, is an oral AMPA-receptor positive allosteric modulator being advanced into Phase 2 testing for major depressive disorder.

The company was created through a partnership between Cardiff University and SV Health Investors. It has already received regulatory clearance to begin a mid-stage clinical study of DT-101.

Why it matters

Psychiatric drug development has a high failure rate because brain disorders are biologically complex and clinical outcomes can be difficult to measure. Many large pharmaceutical companies reduced neuroscience investment after repeated disappointments.

Draig’s round shows that specialist investors are returning where a company can present a defined mechanism, human safety data and a credible clinical plan.

The bigger picture

Interest in mental-health therapeutics has recently focused on psychedelics, ketamine-related treatments and digital tools. Draig represents a more conventional medicinal-chemistry strategy: develop precise oral drugs that can fit into routine prescribing if they work.

The funding removes one financial bottleneck, but the decisive evidence will come from Phase 2. The company must show a meaningful benefit over placebo, acceptable side effects and a clear position among inexpensive generic antidepressants and emerging alternatives.
