Dogtooth secures £14M for harvesting robots
Dogtooth is moving dexterous fruit-picking robots into commercial deployments as horticulture faces persistent labour shortages.

Picking delicate fruit is a simple task for a person and an unusually difficult one for a robot. The machine must find ripe produce through leaves, reach it without damage and work quickly enough to justify its cost.
What happened
Dogtooth Technologies secured more than £14 million in growth capital to expand commercial deployments in the UK and international markets.
The package combines equity from 24 Haymarket, EMV Capital and ACF Investors with Innovate UK grants and a venture-leasing facility from Kineo Finance. It is therefore a blended financing package rather than a pure equity round.
Dogtooth’s robots use computer vision, AI and precision manipulation to identify and pick crops such as strawberries. The company has delivered systems to Dyson Farming and plans to use the funding to manufacture more robots, strengthen the technology and support deployments.
Why it matters
Horticulture depends heavily on seasonal labour, while growers face recruitment uncertainty and rising costs. Automation could make harvest capacity more predictable and reduce the amount of valuable produce left unpicked.
Commercial viability depends on more than whether a robot can pick fruit. It must operate for long periods, handle changing light and plant conditions, avoid crop damage and deliver a competitive cost per kilogram.
The bigger picture
Agricultural robotics is moving from research prototypes toward service and leasing models that make expensive machines easier for farms to adopt. Blended financing is well suited to this stage because manufacturers need both product-development capital and assets that can be deployed with customers.
Dogtooth’s delivery milestones suggest progress beyond a pilot, but scaling hardware support across farms is a different challenge. Reliability and utilisation during short harvest windows will determine whether robotic picking becomes standard infrastructure or remains a specialist tool.
