Discovered Materials puts $1m to solve materials-science challenges
Scientific AI needs tests where a convincing explanation is backed by a verifiable result.

What happened
Discovered Materials announced a $1m prize pool across five research challenges. The problems concern superconductivity, semiconductor interfaces, quantum chemistry, light-driven materials and heat transport.
The money is a prize commitment. It is not startup funding, money already awarded or an announcement that the problems have been solved.
Why it matters
Materials research combines difficult physics with practical constraints on measurement and computation. Clearly defined challenges can give researchers a more useful target than a demonstration that merely looks promising.
The bigger picture
Progress needs reproducible methods and results that meet the stated criteria. Whether a solution comes from an AI system, a human researcher or a combination, the important outcome is a scientific advance that others can inspect and build on.
