Cursor Launches ₹649 India Plan for AI Coding
Cursor’s first country-specific subscription adds local pricing and UPI payments for Indian developers.
Cursor is testing whether local pricing can turn a large developer community into a much larger paying market.
What happened
The AI coding company launched Cursor Start, an India-only subscription priced at ₹649 per month, including tax. It supports local payment methods such as UPI and sits between Cursor’s free and global Pro plans.
The plan includes expanded access to Cursor’s own tools and selected models, but not every model and feature available in the higher-priced Pro tier.
Why it matters
A global dollar price can be a major barrier in markets where developer talent is abundant but average purchasing power is lower. Local pricing lets Cursor reach more individual users without cutting prices everywhere.
India is also a strategically important test market: it has a large software workforce, strong adoption of digital payments and a growing base of AI-native startups.
The bigger picture
AI developer tools are moving from early adopters toward mass-market software subscriptions. That makes packaging, payment methods and regional affordability increasingly important. If the India plan improves conversion without weakening higher tiers, localised pricing could spread across the category.
