Colossal Reportedly Seeks Funding at a $20B–$30B Valuation

Colossal Biosciences may be seeking a valuation normally associated with mature technology platforms, not a company best known for attempting to revive extinct species.

What happened

Colossal is reportedly discussing a new funding round at a valuation between $20 billion and $30 billion, according to Axios reporting cited by TechCrunch. That would represent a sharp increase from the company’s previous $10.2 billion valuation.

The amount being raised, lead investor and final terms have not been disclosed, and Colossal did not comment. The financing is therefore not a completed or confirmed transaction.

Colossal develops gene-editing, reproductive and computational-biology technologies for de-extinction and conservation. It has also spun out companies that commercialise parts of its platform.

Why it matters

The reported valuation suggests investors may be looking beyond headline projects involving the mammoth, dodo and other extinct species. The underlying tools could have applications in animal health, genetic engineering, conservation and human biotechnology, while spinouts offer potential routes to earlier revenue.

That does not make the valuation easy to justify. Much of Colossal’s work remains scientifically difficult, capital-intensive and far from conventional commercial markets. Without confirmed round terms, it is also unclear whether investors will accept the proposed range.

The bigger picture

Biotech platforms are often valued not only for one product, but for the number of companies and applications their technology can generate. Colossal is increasingly being framed in that model: de-extinction attracts attention, while reusable genetic and reproductive tools create the broader venture case.

Until the financing closes, the reported $20 billion to $30 billion figure is a negotiation signal rather than a new valuation.
