Cognition Hires Alex Stamos for AI Security
Cognition brings in veteran security executive Alex Stamos as it looks to secure coding agents and build new security products.

Cognition is turning cybersecurity into a strategic product area as coding agents gain more autonomy over production software.
What happened
The company hired cybersecurity veteran Alex Stamos as chief security officer.
His remit goes beyond defending Cognition's own systems. He also plans to help develop security products that could automate secure software development, identify vulnerabilities and modernise legacy code.
Cognition is best known for Devin, an autonomous coding agent designed to take on larger software-engineering tasks rather than only generate snippets.
Why it matters
The more capable coding agents become, the more important security becomes.
An agent that can change production systems, edit infrastructure or modify large codebases can create meaningful risk if it introduces insecure code or operates with excessive permissions.
That also creates a commercial opportunity. The same agent technology used to build software can potentially be applied to remediation, secure refactoring and vulnerability management.
The bigger picture
AI coding and cybersecurity are beginning to converge.
Security vendors are adding agents, while coding-agent companies are adding security capabilities. The boundary between the two categories may become increasingly blurred as software development, testing and remediation move into the same automated workflow.
