Claude gains paid consumer momentum
New transaction data suggests Claude is gaining momentum among paying consumers, even as ChatGPT remains the much larger player.

Claude is showing signs of consumer payment momentum, suggesting Anthropic’s chatbot is becoming more than an enterprise and developer tool.
What happened
Credit-card transaction analysis from Indagari suggests Anthropic’s Claude consumer payments and revenue have grown by around 75% since January 2026 within the sampled segment.
DataCamp also said Claude has become its most-searched term, although ChatGPT remains much larger overall.
Why it matters
The AI assistant market is not only about enterprise seats and API usage. Consumer willingness to pay is becoming an important signal of product pull, brand strength, and daily usage.
Claude’s growth suggests users may be willing to pay for differentiated AI experiences, especially around writing, coding, reasoning, and workflow support.
The bigger picture
ChatGPT still has the scale advantage, but the market may not be winner-takes-all.
As AI assistants become daily work companions, users may subscribe to different models for different strengths. That could create a more fragmented consumer AI market where positioning, trust, and use-case depth matter as much as raw model performance.
