Chai raises $400M for AI molecular design

Chai Discovery has secured one of the clearest recent votes of confidence in AI-native drug discovery, raising enough capital to move beyond model development and deepen its pharmaceutical partnerships.

What happened

Chai raised a $400 million Series C at a $3.8 billion valuation. Index Ventures led the round, with Kleiner Perkins, Sequoia Capital and Dimension among the major investors. OpenAI, Thrive Capital, General Catalyst and other existing backers also participated.

The company develops AI models that generate molecular and antibody designs for drug-discovery programmes. It has disclosed work involving pharmaceutical companies including Pfizer, Lilly, Novartis and argenx.

Why it matters

The financing suggests investors increasingly view molecular-design models as a potential infrastructure layer for pharmaceutical research rather than a narrow software tool. The opportunity is to reduce the time and cost required to identify promising therapeutic candidates and help research teams explore a much larger design space.

However, generating convincing molecules is only the beginning. Chai and its peers still need to show that AI-designed programmes can survive laboratory validation, clinical trials and regulatory review.

The bigger picture

AI drug discovery is entering a capital-intensive proving phase. The market has largely moved beyond asking whether models can design plausible molecules. The harder question is whether those designs can produce better medicines. Large rounds like Chai’s give the leading platforms enough runway to pursue that evidence.
