Castelion Raises $1B for Defence Manufacturing

Castelion’s $1B financing is less about a single defence product and more about a larger shift: startups are trying to build the manufacturing capacity that used to belong almost entirely to traditional primes.

What happened

Castelion raised a major Series C financing at a reported $13B valuation. The package included a large equity component and a revolving credit facility, giving the company both venture capital and balance-sheet flexibility as it scales production.

The startup was founded by former SpaceX executives and is part of the newer defence-tech wave trying to bring faster engineering cycles, vertical integration and high-volume manufacturing discipline into national-security supply chains.

Why it matters

The most important signal is industrial scale. Defence tech has already moved beyond software demos and prototype autonomy. The next funding frontier is whether startups can actually manufacture complex systems reliably, cheaply and at volume.

That requires a different capital model from classic SaaS. Hardware, facilities, testing, compliance and procurement cycles all demand far more cash before revenue becomes predictable. A round of this size suggests investors are willing to finance that longer, heavier path when the end market is large and strategically urgent.

The bigger picture

Defence startups are increasingly being treated like infrastructure companies: capital-intensive, policy-sensitive and tied to sovereign capability. Castelion’s round fits a broader pattern where venture-backed companies are no longer just selling tools to governments; they are trying to become part of the defence industrial base itself.
