Canva launches its first in-house image model
Canva launches Craft, its first internally developed image-generation foundation model, across its platform and API.

What happened
Canva launched Craft, the first image-generation foundation model developed by its internal research team. The model is available through Dream Lab and Canva’s public API. It first plans a composition and then renders an image at up to 2K resolution.
Why it matters
Design images often require readable text, multiple formats and further editing. A model developed around those workflows may fit Canva’s users better than a general-purpose image generator. Owning the technology also gives Canva more control over cost, speed and product integration.
The bigger picture
Software platforms are building specialised models around their own workflows and data. The competition is shifting from adding a generic AI feature to controlling the full experience. Canva’s quality, ranking and cost claims remain company-reported; actual user outcomes will be the more useful test.
