Bluecore Energy wants to turn nuclear generation into movable infrastructure by placing small modular reactors on barges.
What happened
Seven-month-old Bluecore raised a $10 million pre-seed round led by Slauson & Co., with participation from Harlem Capital, Precursor Ventures and other investors.
The company plans to mount small modular reactors on floating barges that could supply electricity to ports, nearby communities and potentially coastal data centres. It has obtained a port terminal, a barge and a test reactor-pressure vessel, but the project remains at an early engineering and regulatory stage.
The proposed system would use the reactor to heat water, produce steam and drive a turbine, while a closed-loop cooling system manages heat.
Why it matters
Building nuclear plants on barges could theoretically reduce some of the land and construction constraints facing conventional projects. A completed unit might also be assembled in a controlled shipyard environment and moved closer to locations with urgent power demand.
But mobility does not remove the difficult parts of nuclear development. Bluecore will still need to prove safety, secure regulatory approvals, establish fuel and waste arrangements and show that floating operation can compete economically with land-based alternatives.
The bigger picture
AI-driven electricity demand is attracting startups to nuclear concepts that once struggled to find venture backing. Bluecore represents the earliest and most speculative edge of that shift. The $10 million round finances a technical and regulatory experiment, not a commercially proven power plant, but it shows how energy scarcity is reopening the design space for nuclear infrastructure.
