Baseten buys Blaxel for AI-agent infrastructure
Baseten is adding secure, persistent execution environments for agents as AI infrastructure expands beyond model serving.

AI agents need more than access to a model. They also need secure environments where they can execute code, retain state and interact with external tools.
What happened
Baseten acquired Blaxel, which builds persistent and isolated execution environments for AI agents. Blaxel’s technology adds sandboxing, storage and long-running execution capabilities alongside Baseten’s model inference and training infrastructure. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Why it matters
The acquisition reflects a growing distinction between model infrastructure and agent infrastructure. Running an autonomous workflow safely requires different tools from simply serving model inference.
The bigger picture
As agents become more capable, developers will need infrastructure for execution, permissions, state and observability. That layer could become as important as model hosting itself.
