The grid is getting strained from both ends: more electricity demand from AI and more need for flexible storage at the edge.

What happened

Base Power raised a $1 billion Series D, valuing the company at $13 billion post-money. The company sells home battery systems through a subscription model and says it has installed more than 500 MWh of battery capacity.

Instead of asking customers to buy expensive batteries outright, Base uses a recurring model that gives households backup power while also creating a distributed network of storage assets.

Those batteries can potentially help reduce pressure on the grid during peak demand or outages.

Why it matters

This is not just a home-energy story. It is part of a bigger shift toward distributed infrastructure.

As data centres, electrification and extreme weather put more stress on electricity networks, grids need more flexible assets. Batteries sitting in homes, businesses and local sites can become useful if they are coordinated well.

Base’s large round suggests investors see home batteries not only as consumer hardware, but as grid infrastructure.

The bigger picture

The AI power problem will not be solved only by building more power plants. It will also require storage, demand response, smarter software and new business models for using electricity more flexibly.

Base is interesting because it turns a consumer product into a potential grid asset. That makes it a climate-tech story, an infrastructure story and indirectly an AI-power story at the same time.
