Backbone Raises €4M for Food Quality AI

Foodtech does not always look like new ingredients or restaurant apps. Sometimes the bigger opportunity is quality control.

What happened

Brussels-based Backbone raised a €4M pre-seed round to build an AI operating system for food quality and compliance. The platform supports workflows such as supplier tracking, document control, incident management and compliance analysis for food producers.

The company is targeting a part of the food industry that is operationally heavy, regulation-driven and still often managed through disconnected systems.

Why it matters

Food quality problems can become expensive quickly. A missing supplier document, delayed incident response or weak traceability process can create compliance risk, recalls and reputational damage.

Backbone is applying AI to the behind-the-scenes work that keeps food businesses audit-ready. This is a stronger signal than generic AI automation because the workflow has clear stakes: safety, compliance, supply continuity and customer trust.

The bigger picture

Vertical AI is moving into industries where domain-specific processes matter. Food producers need software that understands documents, audits and supplier relationships, not just a general assistant. Backbone shows how AI can enter the food system through operational infrastructure rather than consumer-facing food products.
