Patient records connect to Claude
athenahealth launched a patient-controlled connector allowing eligible US Claude users to share selected health-record information with the assistant.

Health questions are easier to discuss when the relevant records are available. athenahealth is giving eligible patients a direct way to bring that context into Claude.
What happened
athenahealth launched athenaPatient MCP on 2 November. The connector allows Claude Pro and Max users in the US to access selected information from their athenahealth patient records.
Patients sign in with their athenahealth credentials, choose which information to share and can revoke access. Available information includes items such as laboratory results, medications, health conditions and visit history. The connection uses Model Context Protocol to retrieve information at the patient’s request.
Why it matters
Patients often have questions between appointments, when the context of a previous visit may be hard to recall. Connecting directly to a record can reduce the need to retype or upload that information manually.
The usefulness of the experience depends on accurate explanations, clear patient control and careful handling of sensitive information.
The bigger picture
Electronic health records are becoming a connection point between established healthcare systems and general AI assistants. That expands the range of tools patients can choose to use with their own information.
Access to a record does not by itself establish that every interpretation will be correct. The value lies in helping patients understand their information and prepare more informed questions, with clinical decisions continuing to require appropriate professional judgement.
