ARPA-H backs autonomous AI for heart-failure care
A $62.7M ARPA-H programme is backing multiple teams developing autonomous AI systems for heart-failure care.

AI in healthcare is moving from tools that assist clinicians toward systems designed to manage parts of a patient's care more autonomously.
What happened
The US ARPA-H ADVOCATE programme totals $62.7M across multiple teams, including work involving Atman Health and UpDoc. The programme is focused on autonomous AI systems for heart-failure care. The full programme amount should not be attributed to any single participating startup.
Why it matters
Heart failure requires continuous monitoring, medication adjustment and follow-up, making it a potentially valuable use case for AI systems that can coordinate routine care between appointments. But autonomy also raises a much higher bar for safety, accountability and clinical validation.
The bigger picture
Healthcare AI is progressing from documentation and decision support toward closed-loop care management. Public research funding is beginning to test what happens when AI systems are allowed to do more than simply recommend the next action.
