The next step for military drones is not simply making one aircraft more autonomous. It is getting many aircraft to understand and coordinate with one another.

What happened

AeroVironment and Applied Intuition announced a collaboration combining AeroVironment’s Mayhem 10 drone with Applied Intuition’s Acuity autonomy software.

The companies said they recently tested multiple drones sharing information and coordinating their movement. This moves the control model away from a human operator directing every individual aircraft and toward software managing a group around a common objective.

Applied Intuition built its reputation in simulation and autonomy software, while AeroVironment brings established military hardware and experience selling into defence programmes. The partnership therefore joins two different parts of the stack: a physical aircraft and the software intended to coordinate it.

Why it matters

Coordinated groups can potentially cover a wider area, adapt when one vehicle is unavailable and combine information from several sensors. This matters in environments where communications are limited and a single operator cannot manually control every system.

It also shows how venture-backed software companies are entering defence through partnerships rather than manufacturing every piece of hardware themselves. Applied Intuition can apply its autonomy layer to an existing aircraft, while AeroVironment can add new software capabilities without building the entire stack internally.

The bigger picture

The word swarm can make a demonstration sound more mature than it is. Sharing information among several drones in a controlled test is not the same as operating a large autonomous fleet in a contested environment. Communications can be disrupted, sensors can disagree and software must make safe decisions when information is incomplete.

The partnership and test are confirmed, but detailed performance and scalability claims remain company-reported. This is also not yet a disclosed procurement or production contract.

For now, the event is best treated as a direction-of-travel signal. Defence autonomy is moving from individual platforms toward coordinated systems, and the companies that control the orchestration software could become as important as the manufacturers of the vehicles themselves.
