Apple Pay Launches in India

Apple enters one of the world's most advanced digital-payments markets with an initial Axis Bank card rollout.

Apple Pay Launches in India

Apple Pay has entered India, but it is arriving in a payments market where cards are not the default digital behaviour.

What happened

Apple began rolling out Apple Pay in India with support for eligible Axis Bank Visa and Mastercard cards. RuPay is not included at launch, and several other major Indian banks are not part of the initial rollout.

The service enters a market where UPI already dominates digital payments and has made account-to-account transactions fast, cheap and widely available.

Why it matters

India is a much harder test for Apple Pay than markets where contactless cards already dominate. Apple cannot rely simply on replacing a physical card with a digital wallet because many consumers already use a mobile-first payment system that works across banks and merchants.

The initial opportunity may therefore be concentrated among higher-income iPhone users and internationally oriented card customers.

The bigger picture

Global fintech products increasingly have to adapt to strong local payment infrastructure rather than assume the same model works everywhere.

Apple Pay's India launch will test whether a premium wallet can carve out a meaningful niche alongside a domestic real-time payments network that already solves many of the same consumer problems.
