Anthropic Opens Lab for AI Biology Experiments
Anthropic is operating a wet biology lab where its AI models can be connected directly to real-world experiments.

Anthropic is moving beyond software tools for scientists and into the experimental loop itself.
What happened
The company confirmed that it operates a wet biology lab in the San Francisco Bay Area, where AI models can be connected to real-world biological experiments.
The lab conducts internal research and work with external partners as Anthropic expands its life-sciences efforts. The company has also been hiring biology and biochemistry specialists and building scientific tools around Claude.
Why it matters
AI in life sciences has mostly been framed around helping researchers search literature, design molecules or analyse data. Running a physical lab changes the relationship between the model and the scientific workflow.
If an AI system can propose an experiment, observe the result and then generate the next hypothesis, it becomes part of a closed research loop rather than just an assistant sitting beside a scientist.
The bigger picture
Frontier AI companies are increasingly moving into domains where progress depends on interaction with the physical world. Biology is one of the most important examples because experimental cycles are slow and expensive. Better automation could compress those cycles, but it also raises new questions around validation, safety and how much autonomy should be given to general-purpose models in scientific environments.
