Anthropic Signs $11.6B Akamai Cloud Deal
Anthropic commits to a seven-year Akamai cloud deal as frontier AI infrastructure demand spreads beyond GPUs alone.

Anthropic is locking in another major slice of cloud capacity as frontier AI becomes a long-term infrastructure race.
What happened
Anthropic committed to spend $11.6 billion over seven years on Akamai cloud infrastructure.
The deal is conditional on Akamai meeting delivery and availability requirements, and it can be terminated under certain conditions. Akamai expects the agreement to begin generating revenue in 2027 and reach an annual pace of about $1.7 billion by the end of 2028.
The commitment is notable because it emphasises CPU-heavy cloud capacity as well as the broader compute requirements around AI systems.
Why it matters
Frontier AI companies are not only buying GPUs. As models become agents that browse, execute code, handle tools and manage longer workflows, they need a wider mix of compute, networking and cloud services.
This makes infrastructure planning more complex and locks major labs into multi-year supplier relationships.
The bigger picture
AI infrastructure is becoming a capital-allocation and procurement problem on the scale of telecommunications or energy.
The companies that can secure reliable compute capacity at the right price may gain an operational advantage that is as important as the models themselves.
