AMD Could Invest $5B in Anthropic

AMD could invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic alongside a reported two-gigawatt AI infrastructure agreement.

A reported deal between AMD and Anthropic could turn one of Nvidia’s largest rivals into both a chip supplier and a major financial backer of a frontier AI lab.

What happened

AMD has reportedly agreed to invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic as part of an infrastructure agreement covering as much as two gigawatts of AMD Instinct MI450 GPU capacity.

The first gigawatt is expected during the first half of 2027. However, the agreement has not been confirmed directly by either company, so its final size and terms remain uncertain.

Why it matters

Frontier AI companies need enormous quantities of computing power, but most remain heavily dependent on Nvidia. A large Anthropic deployment would give AMD a flagship customer for its next generation of accelerators and help prove that frontier models can run at scale on alternative hardware.

The reported investment would also blur the line between supplier and financier. Chip companies are increasingly using capital commitments to secure future demand for their own infrastructure.

The bigger picture

The AI-chip contest is no longer based only on benchmark performance. It increasingly depends on who can finance data centres, secure long-term customers and assemble the power, networking and software required to operate at gigawatt scale.
