AMD Buys World Labs for $8.2B

AMD is making a major move into world models, bringing one of the most prominent physical-AI research companies inside its chip strategy.

What happened

AMD agreed to acquire World Labs for $8.2 billion. The company, founded by Fei-Fei Li, develops world models designed to understand and simulate physical environments.

Those models are relevant for areas such as robotics training, synthetic environments and systems that need to reason about the physical world rather than only text, images or code.

Fei-Fei Li will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist. The transaction is expected to close before year-end, subject to regulatory approval.

Why it matters

This is not just a talent acquisition. AMD is buying expertise that could shape how AI models, simulation and hardware evolve together.

World models matter because physical AI needs systems that can understand space, movement, objects and cause-and-effect. That connects directly to robotics, autonomous machines and embodied AI.

The bigger picture

AI hardware companies are no longer competing only on chips. They are also trying to own more of the model, software and application stack around those chips.

For AMD, World Labs gives it a stronger answer to competitors building around robotics, simulation and physical AI infrastructure.
