Amazon Closes San Francisco AGI Site

Amazon is consolidating parts of its artificial-intelligence organisation, closing one prominent research site while keeping selected frontier-model work alive.

What happened

Amazon is cutting an undisclosed number of positions in its AGI organisation and closing its San Francisco AGI site.

Its frontier-model laboratory led by Pieter Abbeel will continue operating. The wider organisation was assembled partly through talent and technology deals involving Adept and Covariant.

Why it matters

The move does not necessarily mean Amazon is retreating from advanced AI. It suggests the company is narrowing its focus and combining overlapping programmes after rapidly assembling teams, researchers and technologies from several organisations.

For employees and startups, it is also a reminder that talent acquisitions do not always preserve the original structure of the teams being brought inside a large technology company.

The bigger picture

Big Tech’s first phase of the generative-AI race was about hiring quickly, funding multiple experiments and securing scarce researchers. The next phase is becoming more selective: companies must decide which models, teams and products justify continued investment and how those efforts fit into a coherent platform.
