Satellite internet usually requires a dedicated terminal. Amazon’s new proposal is designed to connect ordinary mobile phones directly to satellites, turning space infrastructure into an extension of terrestrial mobile networks.

What happened

Amazon submitted plans to US regulators for a constellation of 5,105 satellites capable of providing direct-to-phone connectivity.

The company plans to begin launches in 2028. The proposed network would combine spectrum associated with Globalstar and infrastructure from Amazon Leo, Amazon’s existing satellite-broadband programme.

Direct-to-device satellites act like mobile-phone towers in orbit. When a terrestrial network is unavailable, a compatible phone can connect to a satellite passing overhead, initially for services such as messaging and eventually for broader data coverage.

Why it matters

The model could extend basic connectivity across remote areas, oceans and disaster zones without requiring users to carry separate satellite hardware.

For mobile operators, satellite coverage can fill gaps that are too expensive to serve with ground-based towers. For Amazon, the proposal would create another layer of space infrastructure that could work alongside its cloud and broadband businesses.

The filing does not mean the network is already approved or built. Amazon must secure regulatory permission, manufacture and launch thousands of spacecraft, and demonstrate that the economics work at scale.

The bigger picture

Direct-to-phone connectivity is becoming a major competitive front in the satellite industry. SpaceX is developing Starlink’s mobile service, while satellite operators and telecom companies are forming their own partnerships.

Amazon’s 5,105-satellite plan would make it a more direct challenger, but execution will depend on spectrum access, launch cadence, handset compatibility and agreements with mobile carriers.
