Airbus anchors €500M European defence fund
Airbus Defence and Space has become the anchor investor in E2D, connecting a €500M defence-tech fund with a major European industrial customer.

Europe’s defence-tech funding problem is not only a shortage of capital. Startups also need access to established contractors, procurement channels and customers that understand how complex systems reach deployment.
What happened
Airbus Defence and Space became the anchor investor in E2D, the €500M European defence and dual-use growth fund launched by Earlybird and AVP. The size of Airbus’s commitment was not disclosed.
The fund also announced its first investment in Alta Ares, a French company operating in the defence and strategic-technology market. The transaction amount was not disclosed.
This is a material development beyond the fund’s original launch because it adds a large industrial partner with direct experience in aerospace, defence manufacturing and government procurement.
Why it matters
European defence startups often succeed in early technical development but struggle to move into production, certification and repeat government contracts. Airbus can potentially provide technical validation, industrial relationships and a route into larger programmes.
For the fund, an anchor investor of this type may also improve its ability to assess whether a technology can integrate into real defence systems rather than remaining an isolated prototype.
The bigger picture
Defence venture capital is becoming more closely connected to established industry. The emerging model combines private growth capital with strategic investors that can help startups navigate manufacturing and procurement. That may be more valuable than capital alone in a sector where deployment cycles are long and customers are highly concentrated.
