The AI infrastructure boom is beginning to reshape consumer electronics through shared semiconductor supply chains. In India, smartphone shipments fell sharply during the April–June quarter, with the steepest pressure concentrated in lower-priced devices.

What happened

Memory manufacturers are allocating more capacity toward higher-margin products used in AI accelerators, including high-bandwidth memory. That shift has tightened the supply of conventional RAM and storage used in smartphones. Industry data cited in the reporting showed a 10% year-over-year decline in Indian smartphone shipments, while the sub-₹15,000 segment fell much more sharply. Prices across some models also increased materially.

Why it matters

AI infrastructure demand is not isolated inside data centres. It competes for manufacturing capacity, capital and materials that are also needed by phones, laptops and other consumer devices. When component costs rise, premium brands are better positioned to absorb or pass on the increase, while lower-margin manufacturers face greater pressure.
