AI mega-rounds push decacorns toward a record

Nineteen startups have crossed the $10B valuation threshold in 2026, showing how AI mega-rounds are concentrating venture value in a small number of companies.

AI mega-rounds push decacorns toward a record

Venture funding looks exceptionally strong at the top of the market, but the headline numbers conceal how concentrated that strength has become.

What happened

Nineteen startups crossed the $10B valuation threshold during 2026, putting the year’s decacorn class on track to surpass the previous record.

AI companies account for much of the increase. Large rounds for frontier-model developers, infrastructure providers and physical-AI companies have created substantial paper value even while many smaller startups continue to face a selective funding environment.

The result is a venture market in which a limited number of companies can raise billions and materially change aggregate funding statistics.

Why it matters

Headline funding totals are increasingly poor measures of the health of the broader startup ecosystem. One multibillion-dollar AI round can outweigh hundreds of smaller financings.

That concentration affects investors too. Funds without access to the highest-profile rounds may see less benefit from the AI valuation boom, while those that enter late must underwrite very large outcomes to generate venture-scale returns.

The bigger picture

AI is creating a two-speed venture market. Capital is abundant for companies perceived as strategic infrastructure or category leaders, while ordinary software businesses are still expected to show efficient growth and clearer paths to profitability.

The record decacorn count is therefore both a sign of confidence and a warning about concentration. It shows how strongly investors believe in a small set of AI companies, but not necessarily that financing conditions have improved for startups overall.
